Physical Therapy promotes progress and successful acquisition of gross motor skills. Through the use of play as well as specific exercises designed for the child, the physical therapist improves strength, endurance, range of motion and posture. Improvement in walking, running, and jumping improves independence and self esteem.
In addition to enhancing gross motor development, our physical therapists are trained to work with a variety of childhood and athletic injuries. Our expertise in dealing with children provides for a positive and motivating environment for rehabilitation following injuries or surgery.
Through exercise and therapeutic activities, physical therapists help children to be active and engaged in their daily lives.
Occupational Therapy encourages functional skill acquisition by addressing the areas of fine motor skill, self care, feeding, play, and school performance. The occupational therapist is trained in evaluation and intervention in the areas of handwriting, activities of daily living, motor planning (praxis), oral motor function, sensory integration, visual motor integration, and self regulation.
Through a variety of therapeutic activities, children may learn to write their name, dress themselves, or modulate their body in order to successfully complete daily tasks. The occupational therapist partners closely with parents and teachers as well as the child to achieve meaningful progress in school tasks and for independence in daily life.
Sensory processing and or sensory integration is the ability of the child to detect, modulate, discriminate, and integrate sensations in a adaptive or functional way. Sensory processing difficulties are expressed in a variety of ways including extremes in activity of movement, feeling overwhelmed in busy environments, decreased awareness of touch or pain, or picky eating habits. These children may show poor regulation of mood and attention, poor social skills, poor motor skills or poor school performance.
Using both sensory motor and sensory integration approaches, therapists at our center assist the child in developing strategies to focus, learn new skills and build confidence in performing required task in their daily life.
